The Arizona Photojournalism Awards is pleased to recognize the impressive work of this year’s photo winners! (The Arizona Press Club writing and design contest winners will be announced soon.) Please join us for two opportunities to highlight the state’s winning photojournalists.
State award presentation:
A gallery opening and ceremony will be held Sat. May 3 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Tempe Camera Repair, 530 W. University Dr., Tempe. Enjoy a gallery of large-size prints of selected winning photos as well as free snacks and refreshments. Certificates will be presented to winners of the state photo categories at 7:45 p.m. Open to the public, all guests welcome. Free admission. For more info, contact Rob Schumacher.
Community award presentation:
Projected images of winning photos and a ceremony will be held as part of the Arizona Press Club awards party at 6 p.m. at Sat. May 31 at The Duce, 525 S. Central Ave, Phoenix. PHOTO OF THE YEAR: MARK HENLE, ARIZONA REPUBLIC- Sister Elizabeth Carey leads the burial service for Juliana Taylor at the White Tanks Cemetery. Every Thursday, volunteers and inmates arrive to lay the deceased to rest. The west valley cemetery is the resting place for the poor, the homeless and the unclaimed. This photo also won the general news category in the statewide contest.

LaMadrid, who was smuggling marijuana, was shot four times in the back and the leg as he climbed a ladder against the border fence.
