"Deconstructing Jared"
"This was a very strong opening spread -- an excellent portrait and good use of typography that doesn't get in the way. It communicates quickly and dramatically. The simple construction, redundancy and strong use of the color red on the other inside spreads was very good. Unfortunately, these other two spreads didn't share anything (like the color red or the drama of the first photo) with the opening spread. Pull-out segments were a bit long."

"Chain Reaction"
"It was great to see at least one publication use documentary photography instead of manipulated images to illustrate a story. I liked the opening spread and the strong structure of the pages. The lead photo was very strong but some of the other images needed to be more intimate and edited tighter. The lead spread was much stronger than the following pages."

"Feuds for Thought"
"I loved the idea for this article but thought it took a little too much effort to get off the ground. The illustrations, clean layout and headline got my attention and enticed me to read but the designer assumed I knew who the two characters were on the first spread. The intro on the opening spread was a bit long and needed to get the point faster. And the problem carried through the piece. It would have been much stronger if each illustration carried a label or caption telling me quickly who was fighting and for what."

"Here's the pitch"
"There's a lot happening on this page but the designer used a strong grid and structure and lots of bold face type and emphasis to make it work. Good photo and headline and a good use of a quote got this entry close."
