— "Access Across America's" Dave Cuillier tells of his 14,000-mile tour across the nation for better access to public records, Oct. 21
Please make plans to join Valley of the Sun SPJ to hear of one man's 45-day journey to dozens of newsrooms and town halls across America to teach and learn about better access to government through our right to inspect public records.
David Cuillier (CUH-lee-yer), University of Arizona journalism professor and national co-chair of SPJ's Freedom of Information Committee, will describe what he learned this past spring from 14,135 miles he traveled over 33 states. During the trip, called "Access Across America," Cuillier spoke to 1,009 people about public records and access to government.
It's 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21, in the Cronkite Theater, which is Room 202 of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, 555 N. Central Ave. (at Fillmore between Van Buren and Roosevelt), Phoenix. Admission is free.
What did Cuillier learn? From his article on his experience in the September/October 2010 issue of SPJ's publication, Quill magazine, this: "To my surprise, I found that the No. 1 problem in accessing public records is not denials." Find out what the No. 1 problem in accessing public records really is. Join us Oct. 21. It's a great way to celebrate Free Speech Week.
